Time for Some Updates..

I can't believe that it's been a week since I last posted on my blog. Well, it's not like a lot of things have happened, except that I caught the flu and I'm praying that I won't get upgraded in the next two days while I'm on reserve.

I flew to Singapore on my 3rd day, and we broke the record for inflight sales! Even though it was a 3-hour flight, I hardly noticed the time because I was too busy trying to put my sales skills to the test. Good thing too, 'cause I was able to sell a cap and a really cute usb flash drive which looks like the one on the left except that it's customized to look like an Airphil Express plane.

Yesterday, I had a flight from Manila to Iloilo, and even though it was an early morning flight (0515H with a reporting time of 0415H), I couldn't really complain because we flew with the cast of ASAP! The show was held in Iloilo because of the Dinagyang Festival. I'm not really into showbiz personalities, because I rarely get to watch TV but that particular flight was certainly interesting. I had to brief Vina Morales, Shaina Magdayao, Richard Poon, etc. who were all seated in the exit row. I just have to say, they're all pleasant and cooperative, and they didn't think twice about letting me put their bags in the overhead bins. I wish all passengers could be like them! Oh, I kinda screwed up my safety demo and I heard some passengers up front snicker. I know I should be offended, but they were teenage guys and we (people who are mature enough) all know not to take them seriously. hahaha.

So far, the people I've flown with have been nice, helpful, and considerate to a newbie like me, so even though I'm not sure if they'd be able to read this, I'd still like to say thanks. It's always nice to work with people who not only do a great job, but who also share their expertise. :)

And that's it for now...need to study just in case I get called out for a flight tomorrow (but still crossing my fingers that I won't be).

Ciao!

This is Me, Rambling...

- I officially started flying today (first flight with pay!) and thank God I managed with barely enough sleep! It's a good thing I only had two roundtrip flights, because by the end of the trip back to Manila, I was ready to hurl -  I blame it on turbulence!! :)

- I know it's a bit early to say this, but I love this job! There are some bits about it that I can do without (such as cleaning the lavatory..hey, I'm only human!), but I enjoy the part wherein I get to meet lots of new and interesting people. It's nice to think that I can be part of someone's day even for just a little while. It's also heartwarming when people say that we provide great service (and that we have the looks to go with it too!) :) They say that it's the journey, and not the destination that matters. Being a cabin crew member is about helping turn that journey into the best experience possible for passengers.

- It's not beef or chicken - it's udon, beef, or mushroom? :) Kidding aside, I get to develop my sales skills on the job because we don't have meal service, we sell snacks and merchandise. Now what to do about my math skills...

- I love the fact that I can go home whenever I want to and that I don't have to leave the country to do something exciting (living/working in another country is not all peaches and cream, ya know?) My workplace is thousands of feet up in the air, what other job can top that?

- I missed being in uniform! hahaha, yes I'm so random. It's so much easier not to think of what to wear for work. Oh, and I get to be in comfy sneakers (for the time being)!

Despite my random ramblings, there's one thing I know for sure...there's so much to be grateful and happy for because even though it was unexpected, everything's falling into place. <3

So this is what it feels like...

...to survive my first ever home reserve!

I thought that the anticipation and anxiety would drive me mad, and I kept checking my phone every few minutes just to make sure I didn't miss a call. Missing a call can prove to be fatal to my new career as a flight attendant (that's not an exaggeration, I tell you).

And no, I didn't get a call, even though I was 4th on the list.

One more home reserve (to start in the wee hours of the morning) before my first productive flight!

Wish me luck! :)

✈ It's Official! ✈

It took hard work, determination, perseverance, patience, sleepless nights, and extreme effort, but it was well worth it in the end because...

I am now one of Airphil Express' newest cabin crew!

At this moment, I can say that this will be one of my major accomplishments for 2011. The past two months have been a roller coaster ride, and I'm glad I managed to finish basic cabin crew training unscathed and in one piece :) Of course, I wouldn't have done it without support from God and my loved ones, and I'm grateful for that. What I'm looking forward to next: regularization in July.

✈ I'm armed and cross-checked! ✈

1.11.11

1.11.11 was a day of firsts (not just literally)!

I finally got released to fly on the Airbus A320!

I was lucky because I flew with my adviser...even if I was nervous as heck, I knew that my 2nd SLE wouldn't be too bad. The crew I flew with was really nice and helpful, and they shared tips that helped me remember what to do the next time I flew. I even shared the same nickname with one of the flight attendants - the only difference is, hers has an E at the end and mine doesn't. Cool, huh? (Yes, I'm mababaw)

Anyway,  my flights were to Tagbilaran and Legaspi (again), and this time, I had enough time to take a few pictures (to follow)..I even got to see Mayon Volcano (for the first time, might I add). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I didn't need to set foot outside the airport to see the volcano. It would've been nice to see the top of Mayon but it was too cloudy to be visible. Good thing is, I have a few more Legaspi flights coming up so I'm sure I'll be able to see the volcano in its entirety.

By the end of the 4th leg, I was released! I forgot the answers to some questions during the Q & A with my adviser and the CA1 but I still got a good grade, which was more than I was hoping for. Right now, the important thing is that I'm one step closer to becoming a full-fledged cabin crew!

Thank you, God.

So you want to become a flight attendant?

I've been getting a few messages from people asking me for help or tips on how to ace the interview for the much coveted flight attendant job so I thought I'd blog about it instead. Don't get me wrong - I'm not an expert on the subject, but I do have a bit of experience both in being a recruiter and an interviewee so I still have some insights to share (which I hope will be useful in helping you guys out).

So here we go...

1. Wear business attire that fits just right.

I have two reasons for this. The first one is obvious - you want to look smart and presentable because first impressions count. Your looks are the first thing the interviewer sees, so you want to project a professional image that is fitting to the airline you're applying for. The second reason is that when you're wearing something that doesn't fit right, there is a tendency for you to feel uncomfortable which can affect your confidence or how you act during the interview. Besides, it's not very attractive to tug a short skirt down while walking towards the interviewer.

Personally, I think that it's better to be on the safe side when it comes to wearing business attire. Wear a blazer over a short sleeved blouse and knee-length skirt. Don't forget to wear high-heeled shoes to make your legs look longer!

2. Put your hair up in a bun.

Some airlines explicitly ask you to tie your hair up when you go for the interview but some don't. It's better to look neat and put together so whatever the case, fix your hair. Better to put it up in a bun than a ponytail because the latter is more casual-looking, and as I said, you want to make a good impression. Use gel to tame any stray hair.

3. Pile on the blush and show off your lips with shades of pink/red lipstick.

Airlines have grooming standards, and that usually means that the pale look is out.

A good airline doesn't just focus on how their would-be flight attendants should look like, but on the over-all package - communication skills, character, brains, and job fit. Being a flight attendant is more than providing customer service, it's about ensuring the safety of each and every flight. It means being able to multitask, monitor whatever is happening in the cabin and ensuring that passengers comply with the safety standards set by the airline. A flight attendant is a security officer, firefighter, first aider, and lifeguard all rolled into one!

As I said, it's important to make a good first impression, but it's more important that you're able to impress the recruiter up until you leave the interview room so you can secure the job.

4. Practice, practice, practice!

Now that you look the part, it's time to brush up on your communication skills and prepare for the actual interview part. Most interviewers would start  by asking you to tell them something about yourself. Instead of just saying your age, school/course, previous work experiences, or reciting something straight out of your resume, try saying something about yourself that would help make you more memorable to the interviewer.

Remember that the purpose of the interview is also to check whether you're suited for the job so expect questions like "why do you want to be a flight attendant?" or "why do you want to work for us?" to pop up. Review your resume because the questions would most likely revolve around you (your work experiences, family background, educational attainment, and the like). Think of some challenges that you've had in the past and how you were able to overcome those challenges because interviewers (in any organization) want to know how you would fare in difficult situations. No one wants to hire a quitter. Review company information just in case questions about the company come up.

Giving one-word answers is a no-no during interviews. Elaborate! Speak in straight English, even if the interviewer is speaking in Filipino or Taglish. Do away with fillers such as "umm" or "ahh," if you're thinking of something to say, just pause until you come up with right word/s.

It's better to come early and be interviewed first so you have more time to impress the interviewer. An interview is about showcasing your skills and capabilities so it's better to take advantage of the time you've been given. Show them that you really want the job and that you're worth it!

5. Most importantly, SMILE!

You're trying out for a job that involves interacting with people 24/7 which means you always have to be pleasant whatever the circumstance. Greet everyone you meet and make eye contact to project an image of confidence.

Good luck!

P.S. In case you want to add anything to my list, feel free to add a comment below. :)

Countdown

16 days to go before the much awaited/dreaded FINALS!

Batch 45-10

Had a mock briefing with an L1 today and it made me realize that I still need to memorize and cram tons of information into my already overloaded brain! I had the worst case of mental block, but I'm charging it to experience and taking it as a challenge to do well in the real briefings. Looks like my manual will be my accessory for the next few weeks until my SLE. No time for Christmas shopping, parties, or what-have-yous, but I know it will be worth it in the end. So friends and family, I'm apologizing in advance. I promise to make it up to you next year (if I'm not too busy with recurrent training, that is :)).
